Swing Dance Footwear

Flat shoes for beginners are highly recommended while taking up the tasters class at the Swing Socials. As you begin to progress in your dancing, you might want to invest in swing dancing footwear that might enhance your dance experience. There are many styles and preferences in looking for the best footwear. As for dancing in heels we usually want a shoe that is closed or with straps, so it doesn’t come off your foot while dancing. Furthermore, the heel shouldn’t be too skinny to sustain a stable balance while doing stomps or any exercises that requires your heel. Be aware and avoid wearing stilettos, Salsa, Tango or Latin dance shoes.

The dance floor at the New Star Studio is moderately slippery, so a rubber soled shoes are usually acceptable on the dance floor.

If you wear your leather soled shoes in class, you will surely slide, but if that’s a technique or style you are working on - practicing it every class would be recommended.

Rubber Shoes

Rubber soles will be more sticky,  it is ideal to dancing to fast Lindy Hop tempo which helps to grip the floor compared to a leather insole. Canvas plimsolls such as Keds and similar lace-up styles have been used by dancers since the 1930s. Popular international brands are easy to source in Kuala Lumpur. Leather Shoes

Leather soles will be slippery, so this is better for spinning and sliding. While suede soles are somewhere in between. Some dance shoes have a leather sole, but a rubber heel, so you can slide on the ball of your foot but stop by putting down your heel. An option to getting your heels sliding, you'll need a wood or leather heel to achieve this. International brands are likely to ship from overseas. Local shoemakers can custom make dance shoes that could roughly estimate to 2 - 3 weeks to complete.
